Nokia and Sempra Highlight Successful CBRS Neutral Host Deployment at SDG&E

At the October 2026 Utility Broadband Alliance (UBBA) conference, Caleb Murphy of Sempra and Alexander van Overveld of Nokia presented a session titled "Applying Neutral Host PWLs for Utility Connectivity Needs," highlighting the successful deployment of CBRS neutral host mobile coverage in San Diego Gas & Electric's (SDG&E) new office building.

The discussion demonstrated how utilities can address indoor mobile connectivity challenges while maintaining the security, control, and operational flexibility required by critical infrastructure organizations.

Meeting the Unique Connectivity Requirements of Utilities

For utilities like SDG&E, reliable cellular connectivity must work within demanding enterprise IT and security requirements. These organizations need greater control over their communications infrastructure, including the ability to maintain network isolation and independence from mobile operators where required.

The SDG&E deployment illustrates how CBRS neutral host technology can meet these requirements while delivering reliable public mobile coverage for employees and visitors.

A key theme of the session was the importance of flexibility. Rather than requiring utilities to adapt their security and networking policies to a rigid cellular architecture, the solution must accommodate the organization's existing requirements.

Collaboration Makes the Difference

Successful connectivity deployments depend on more than technology. They require partners who understand the customer's environment, bring deep technical expertise, and adapt their approach to the customer's needs.

During the session, Caleb acknowledged the value of working with experienced, flexible partners to address SDG&E's specific requirements.

For InfiniG, this recognition was particularly meaningful. Working alongside Nokia and the Sempra team, InfiniG helped deliver a neutral host solution that satisfied SDG&E's connectivity and security requirements.

The project also demonstrates the value of a collaborative approach in which each partner contributes expertise toward a common customer outcome.

A Model for Utility Connectivity

As utilities invest in modern wireless infrastructure, the ability to support both private cellular networks and public mobile coverage is becoming increasingly important.

CBRS technology creates opportunities to share wireless infrastructure across these applications while maintaining the separation, security, and control that critical infrastructure operators require.

The SDG&E deployment offers a practical example of how these requirements can be addressed through flexible architecture and close collaboration.

InfiniG thanks Caleb Murphy, Alexander van Overveld, Sempra, and Nokia for sharing their experience with the utility community at UBBA and for their partnership in delivering this successful project.
