How Meta Changed the In-building Mobile Coverage Game

Meta has successfully deployed a groundbreaking in-building wireless network using the CBRS spectrum and small cells to ensure consistent mobile coverage for employees deep within its office buildings. In partnership with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile—and with Deloitte’s support as an integrator—Meta built a neutral host network that enables seamless roaming for users of all three major U.S. carriers. This cost-effective solution replaces expensive Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), reducing deployment time by 75% and offering significant savings.

The deployment leveraged Multiple Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology to integrate public carrier services with Meta's private network infrastructure. Testing by each operator ensured compatibility, including for emergency services like 911. While Meta didn’t disclose vendors or specific savings figures, executives confirmed improved performance and coverage across all buildings.

This initiative reflects Meta’s long-standing investment in connectivity innovation. Industry players such as Crown Castle and MGM Resorts are following suit, and CBRS-based indoor wireless solutions are gaining traction. As 80% of mobile usage occurs indoors, the approach offers commercial property owners a valuable differentiator while laying groundwork for private 5G applications in enterprise environments.
